Principal Languages of India

About 1600 (appx) languages and dialects are spoken in India. Broadly, these languages belong to the Indo-Aryan and Dravidian families of languages. Some Indo-European languages are also spoken and understood by some of the people in India.

Principal Languages of India 

The Indian Constitution recognises 22 major languages, which are specified in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution and these are:   (1) Assamese, (2) Bengali, (3) Bodo, (4) Dogri, (5) Gujrati, (6) Hindi, (7) Kanada, (8) Kashmiri, (9) Konkani, (10) Maithali, (11) Malayalam, (12) Marathi, (13) Manipur, (14) Nepali, (15) Odia, (16) Punjabi, (17) Sanskrit, (18) Santhali, (19) Sindhi, (20) Tamil, (21) Telegu and (22) Urdu. 

Hindi is the official language of India and English is an associate language. 0 0 0
