Thinking About It

Q.1. What havoc has the super cyclone wreaked in the life of the people of Orissa?

Ans:  The super cyclone wreaked very pathetic havoc in the life of the people of Orissa in 1999. It uprooted the trees, broke down the houses. The heavy rain was going on continuously. It floated away many animals. Many people died.  Those who survived went on without food for four days. Many children became orphaned and many women become widows. The people were left with almost nothing. It was as if the angel of Death came down all of a sudden to sweep away mercilessly the lives and property of the people.

Q.2. How has  Prashanta, a teenager, been able to help the people of his vilùage?

Ans:  Prashanta was a young boy with a sympathetic mentality towards the sufferers. He was moved at by the sorrow and sufferance of the village people. So he took a lead and organized a  group of youth and elders and collected some rice and provided the hungry villagers with a full meal.  He along with his group cleaned the refugee shelter. They cleaned the filth, urine, vomit, and floating carcasses and provided medical treatment to the injured. He mobilized women to look after the orphaned children.

Thus Prashanta provided all the necessary support to the cyclone victims.

Q.3. How have the people of the community helped one another? What role do the women of Kalikuda play during these days?

Ans:  The people of the community rendered their helping hand to one another in times of distress. A group of youth and elders volunteered under the leadership of Prashanta to clean the shelter of filth, urine, vomit and floating carcasses. Others attended the sick people. Some women took care of the orphaned children. Later on, they took part in the food-for-work program started by an NGO.

Q.4. Why do Prashanta and other volunteers resist the plan to set up an institution for orphans and widows? What alternatives do they consider?

Ans:  The Government wanted to set up institutions for orphans and widows but  Prashanta and other volunteers resisted the plan. It was because they thought that in such institutions children would grow up without love and women would suffer from stigma and loneliness.

As an alternative, they thought of settling the orphans and the widows in their won community. They also preferred the orphans to be adopted by the childless families to grow up with love and affection. 0 0 0.
