In the September 21 epidemiological update, the WHO said, “The number of weekly COVID-19 cases and deaths globally continued to decline this week, with more than 3.6 million cases and just under 60,000 between September 13-19.” Deaths occurred. This brings the cumulative number of confirmed cases and deaths globally to more than approximately 228 million and 4.6 million, respectively. While the regions of the Americas, as well as the Eastern Mediterranean, Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific, reported weekly cases. African and European regions reported similar deaths compared to the previous week. Similarly, African, Eastern Mediterranean and South-East Asian regions reported a decrease in COVID-19. The South-East Asia region recorded the largest percentage decrease (27%). In contrast, the Western Pacific showed an increase (7%) in the number of deaths, compared to the US and European region last week.

Worldwide the total case count stands at 231,103,410, with 4.7 million deaths and just shy of 208 million recoveries. In the past seven days, weekly new cases worldwide decreased by 8%, while a weekly total of 3.5 million new cases were reported. Of those, about 1 million cases occur in the U.S. alone.  There are cases in 221 countries and territories. Thirty-five countries have more than 1 million cases, with 21 having more than 2 million cases each.

The countries with the highest number of cases followed by the US (which has 43.4 million cases) are India, Brazil, the UK and Russia. India now has 33.6 million cases and Brazil has 21.3 million. The UK has 7.6 million cases and Russia has 7.4 million cases.

The countries with the most deaths in the last seven days are the US, Russia, Brazil, Mexico and Iran.

In South and Southeast Asia, 216,161 new cases were reported: in India, an increase of 4%. In the Philippines, there was a 7% decrease in new cases (134,411) but 1,487 new deaths (an increase of 39%). The country is closing schools for another year, one of the only countries to do so since the start of the pandemic. President Rodrigo Duterte criticized rich countries at the United Nations and accused them of hoarding vaccines. Singapore continues to rise with 7,418 new cases (a 70% increase) in the past seven days, beating the daily number April 2020, including a daily high of 1,504 cases on Thursday 23 September.

Brazil is on the rise again with 157,383 new cases (an increase of 47%), including Health Minister Marcelo Quiroga, who after attending a meeting at the UN is in isolation. Brazil continues to have the third-highest number of cases and the second-highest number of deaths. Peru has the highest number of deaths per capita in the world at 5,938/1 million (199,108 total deaths) and the sixth highest number of deaths in the world.

Australia is battling a surge of new cases and is now seeing a significant (25%) increase in the number of deaths. The pattern of virus distribution has made two Australias – one under severe lockdowns and restrictions, and one where life continues as normal. In Melbourne, the manufacturing industry is protesting against a vaccine mandate.

In the Middle East, Syria has seen a large increase in cases (1,452 cases / 42% increase) and deaths (61 deaths / 45% increase). Turkey has the world’s fourth-highest number of new cases (193,563 cases/a 12 percent increase) for a total of 6.9 million cases.

Most African countries have seen a decreasing or small increase, which is a product of minimal availability of testing rather than control of the spread. South Africa had the newest cases in Africa (26th for new cases and 17th for total cases), but its 20,097 new cases represent a decrease of 38%). South Africa also had the largest number of new deaths in Africa (1,031 new deaths/22% reduction). In the Seychelles where more than 1 in 5 people have tested positive despite a 72.8% complete vaccination rate, young people aged 12 to 17 have just started receiving the Pfizer vaccination. 0 0 0
