Q.1. Have you come back?’ Said the woman. ‘I thought that no one had come back.’ Does this statement give some clue about the story? If yes, what is it?

Ans: Yes, the statement gives some clue about the story.

The narrator was the daughter of Mrs. S. Her mother had a friendship with a woman by the name of Mrs. Dorling who used to visit the house of Mrs. S. during the post-war time. Every time of her visit she carried away some valuable belongings of Mrs. S with her.

 the war was over, the daughter of Mrs. S. went to the house of Mrs. Dorling in search of her mother’s belongings. But Mrs. Dorling was surprised to see her. She hoped that the daughter of Mrs. S would not come back to claim the things of her mother. At first, she pretended that she had not recognized her. But when she recognized the girl and she reminded Mrs. Dorling of her mother then she only uttered, ‘Have you come back?’

These words reveal a lot about the story and give a clue to Mrs. Dorling’s dishonesty.

Q.1. The story is divided into Pre-war and Post-war times. What hardship do you think the girl underwent during these times?

Ans: The short story entitled ‘The Address’ by Margo Minco is divided into Pre-war and Post-war times.

During Pre-war times there was peace, law, order and communal harmony. Mrs. Dorling used to visit the house of Mrs. S. But when war broke out then some people, especially the Jews faced a lot of hardship. They were used to be killed by the Nazis. Many families left the land leaving behind their belongings. The narrator of the story also had to suffer a lot. After her mother’s advice, she went to the house of Mrs Dorling with the hope of getting them back. But she became the victim of Mrs. Dorling’s betrayal. First, she pretended not to recognize her as she did not wish Mrs. S’s daughter to come back to the city in search of her mother’s belongings. Thus we see that war destroyed hopes, peace, security, faith and communal harmony.

Q.3. Why narrator of the story want to forget the address?

Ans: The narrator of the story, the daughter of dead Mrs. S. went to Mrs. Dorling’s house in search of her mother’s belongings as- plates, vases, antique, silver cutlery etc. which were taken off by Mrs. Dorling before the war broke out. But Mrs. Dorling pretended not to recognize her. So the narrator came back and after some days she went to the house of Mrs. Dorling again but she was out of home. Her daughter asked her to sit down and offered her tea. In this second visit, she saw there all the silver cutlery, antique plates, big vases etc. which were taken off by Mrs. Dorling from their house before the war broke out.

Then all of a sudden the narrator came to the realization that the things were useless for her because the true owner was dead. She resolved never to go there again. So she wanted to forget the address as her faith in people’s honesty came down after the war.

Q.4. ‘The Address’ is a story of the human predicament that follows war”. Comment

Ans: Margo Minco’s short story, ‘The Address’  gives an account of the predicament suffered by people after the war. People lost their human qualities, sympathies, brotherly feeling, communal harmony, good faith etc. During the war, Mrs. S had to leave the city leaving her valuables belongings to a woman named Mrs. Dorling.

When the war was over, the narrator’s mother died and she came back to their town and went to the house of Mrs. Dorling in search of her mother’s belongings kept in trust with Mrs. Dorling. But we see that the girl is maltreated by Mrs. Dorling. She refused to recognize her. She does not even let the narrator come in and sit awhile. Thus the war affected on human feelings and relationships and for that people had to suffer predicament.  0 0 0.
