Q.1. You will probably agree that this story does not have a breathless adventure and exciting action. Then what is your opinion makes it interesting?
Ans: ‘The Summer of the Beautiful White Horse’ is a story that has neither breathless adventure nor exciting action. Yet the story is interesting and it is because of the following reasons-
First, the story is interesting because it deals with child psychology. It reveals the natural urge of children for fun and adventure. Mourad and Aram are under age. But they have a natural tendency of riding a horse. And for fulfilling their tendency Mourad stole a horse. Aram thought that stealing a horse was not the same as stealing something else.
Secondly, the story displays the honesty and simplicity of the Garoglanian family. The people of the tribe are renowned for their honesty and truthfulness and this trait of honesty is well portrayed through the characterisation of Mourad and Aram as they returned the horse to its rightful owner after having learnt horse riding.
Thirdly, a character like John Bryo draws our attention because of his honesty and simplicity. Another character Uncle Khosrove is also interesting because he bears some individual traits as he is easily irritable, impatient and he stops anyone from talking by roaring.
For all those reasons the story is interesting.
Q.2. Did the boys return the horse because they were conscience-stricken or because they were afraid?
Ans: Mourad stole the horse for learning and enjoying riding. Aram, the cousin of Mourad also thought that stealing a horse for riding could not be the same as stealing something else. But eventually, they returned the horse to its rightful owner and it was because of they were concious stricken.
Mourad and Aram belonged to a family which was well known for honesty and truthfulness for centuries. One day, when John Bryo the owner of the horse came to Aram’s house and told him that his horse was missing. Then Aram was afraid lest their act of dishonesty should become known. Again after few days, John Bryo happened to meet the two boys with the horse in the street. He recognized the horse but did not suspect the boys because he was well aware of the reputation of the family to which the boys belonged. At this, the boys became conscience-stricken and feeling very sad they returned the horse to its rightful owner.
Q.3. Compare and contrast the two cousins Aram and Mourad.

Ans: Aram and Mourad were two cousins. They belonged to the Garoghlanian family which was well known for honesty.
Aram is calm and quiet. He suffers from the feeling of nostalgia. For him, the whole world was full of romance and magnificence. He liked adventures like horse riding. He is characterised by childish straight as he thought that stealing a horse for riding was not the same thing as stealing something else.
On the other hand, Mourad was crazy. He was considered to be the natural descendent of the crazy streak of the family. Mourad had a wonderful understanding with a horse. He had a great tendency for horse riding. But he could not buy a horse because of extreme poverty. To have his desire of riding a horse fulfilled, he stole a horse and shared its riding with Aram. Mourad was a good rider but Aram was a bad one.
But later on, being concious stricken of the honesty of their family, they returned the horse to its rightful owner.
Thus the storyteller has characterised Aram and Mourad in the story.
Q.4. Give a character sketch of Khosrove.
Ans: Khosrove is a minor but attractive character in the story entitled, ‘The Summer of the Beautiful White Horse’.
He is the uncle of Aram. The narrator of the story said that Khosrove had the crazy streak of the family. He was an enormous man with a powerful head with black hair and a large moustache. He was a man of furious temperament. By nature, he was easily irritable and impatient. He stopped anyone from talking by roaring. Once a farmer by the name of John Bryo came to their house and said that his horse had been stolen. Then Khosrove got irritated and shouted, “It was no harm.”
Another day Khosrove’s own son Arak ran eight blocks to tell him that their house was on fire. He roared and said, ‘there is no harm in it.”
Thus the storyteller has portrayed him as a humorous character in the story.
