Joanne Rowling, better known as J. K. Rowling, was born on July 31, 1965, in Yate, Gloucestershire, England. She grew up with her parents and younger sister, and from a young age, she showed a passion for storytelling.
As a child, she enjoyed reading and writing stories. Her family moved to the village of Winterbourne when she was nine, and it was there that she met her lifelong friend Sean Harris. They shared a common interest in fantasy stories and would create their own tales.
In her teenage years, she experienced the loss of her mother, who passed away after a long battle with multiple sclerosis. This difficult period influenced her writing and the themes of loss and resilience that appear in her later works.
After finishing school, Rowling attended the University of Exeter, where she studied French and the Classics. Upon graduating, she worked various jobs, including as a bilingual secretary for Amnesty International and later for the research department at Greenpeace. The idea for the Harry Potter series came to Rowling during a train journey from Manchester to London in 1990. Over the next several years, she outlined the entire seven-book series and began writing the first book, “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” (released as “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” in the United States).
Rowling faced many challenges during this time, including the loss of her job and the difficulties of being a single mother. Despite these obstacles, she persevered and completed the first book. Initially, the manuscript faced rejection from several publishers, but finally, Bloomsbury agreed to publish it in 1997.
The success of “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” marked the beginning of an extraordinary literary journey. The subsequent books in the series gained immense popularity, turning Rowling into a global sensation. The books were not only well-received by children but also captivated adult readers around the world.
