Nobel Prizes: The Nobel Prizes are the most prestigious international award in the world. These awards were instituted by the inventor of dynamics, Alfred Bernard Nobel (1833-96). These are awarded on 10th December, which is the death anniversary of Alfred Nobel. 

The Nobel Prizes are awarded in the fields of physics, chemistry, medicine, peace, literature and economics for the benefit of mankind. In 1967, the award for economics was given for the first time. The other five prizes are being given since 1901. International Awards Honours and Prizes

Swedish Academy of science gives the Nobel Prizes for physics and chemistry, the Stockholm Faculty of Medicine gives the Nobel Prize for medicine, and the Swedish Academy of  Literature gives the Nobel Prize for literature. 

A panel of five parliaments of the Norweigian Parliament selects the awardee for the Nobel Prize for peace.

Wilhelm Rontgen (1845-1923) was the first to receive Nobel Prize in Physics.

Pulitzer Prize: It was instituted in the year 1970 and is given in honour of U.S. publisher, Joseph Pulitzer. The award is given for accomplishments in journalism, literature and music in the USA. 

Booker Prize: It is the highest literary award, which was instituted in the year 19968. It was set up by the Booker Company and the British Publishers Association. 

Jawaharlal Nehru Award: It was instituted by the Government of India in 1965 in order to honour Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. It is given annually for outstanding contributions to the promotion of friendship, international understanding and goodwill. Presently, it carries an amount of Rs. 25 lakhs. 

Oscar Award: In 1929, Oscar Award was instituted by the Academy of Motion Pictures in the United States. In 1992, Satyajit Ray was the first Indian to be awarded Oscar for lifetime achievements in cinema.  

Kalinga Award: It was instituted in the year 1952 by B. Patnaik, the founder of the Kalinga Foundation Trust. It is given for the popularisation of science by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

Magsaysay Awards: The Magsaysay Awards are given to honour individuals and organisations in Asia for their outstanding contributions to public service, community leadership, journalism, literature and creative arts and international understanding. It was instituted in the year 1957 and is given annually on August 31.  It is named after Raman Magsaysay the former president of the Philippines. 

Gandhi Peace Prize: It was instituted in the year 1995 on the occasion of the 125th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. 

U.Thant Peace Prize: It is awarded annually to the leading environmentalist. It recognises the work of environmentalists at the global level. 

Templeton Award: It is given in order to honour John M. Templeton, a presbyterian of Nassau, Bahamas. It is being conferred for progress in religion.

UNESCO Human Rights Award: It is awarded to persons for their contributions in the field of Human Rights Awareness. It is given every alternate year by UNESCO. 

World Food Prize: It is given for the cause of agriculture and food development by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). 

Right Livelihood Award: The Right Livelihood Society of London instituted this award in 1980. It is awarded to the individuals who promote and contributes to the fields of environment and social justice. 

UN Human Rights Award: This award is given every sixth year by United Nations (UN) for personal contribution to the cause of human rights. 0 0 0
